Hospitals that pay for nursing school are very common, and with a little research, you won’t have to pay one cent for your nursing school.
There are several options that are available, each with their own set of pros and cons.
Tuition Reimbursement
Pros
- Reimbursement is typically given after each semester.
- Most programs require that you work for the hospital giving you vital work experience.
- Several hospitals have this program which can be found on their websites or by contacting their human resources departments.
- Some programs even pay you to go to nursing school.
- You graduate from your school with little to no debt.
Cons
- You have to pay up front before being reimbursed.
- There are grade requirements that you must meet to be eligible for reimbursement.
- Most reimbursement programs require that you work for the hospital a set number of hours a week.
- Typically there is a contract that you are bound to with certain penalties if you remove yourself from the program or job.
Loan Forgiveness
Pros
- Although the terms Tuition Reimbursement and Loan Forgiveness are often interchangeable, most loan forgiveness programs pay for your tuition up front.
- You are virtually guaranteed work because of a contract you must sign.
- Some programs will even pay back previous student loans you were bound to before you entered their program.
- Not all Loan Forgiveness programs require that you work for the sponsor while you are in school giving you plenty of time towards your studies.
- Free tuition = No struggling to pay back student loans.
Cons
- In order to receive Loan Forgiveness, most programs require you sign a contract that requires you work a certain number of years for them.
- You will be required to pay back the loan if you break the contract.
- If you don’t like the hospital you are contracted to work for, you are out of luck unless you want to be stuck with the bill.
- Some programs won’t even give you a raise until you’ve met the service of the contract.
Nursing School Grants and Scholarships
Pros
- Multiple scholarships and grants are available to cover the costs of your schooling.
- Most scholarships & grants require very little from those that apply for them as compared to the Tuition Reimbursement and Loan Forgiveness programs.
- You can apply for as many scholarships and grants as you like, and sometimes you can even get paid to attend the school of your choice.
- The time investment is much more reasonable, requiring only personal information or essays for most grants and scholarships.
- There is no penalty for rejections.
Cons
- The competition is fierce for scholarships and grants, and there is a high probability of not getting one.
- Many grants and scholarships require writing entries which take up valuable time that could lead to nothing in return.
- There are many loopholes one must get through to even be eligible for certain nursing school scholarships and grants.
Some hospitals don’t advertise their programs that assist with paying for nursing school. If you wish to find out which schools in your area offer these programs and rewards, you must contact their human resources departments to get the details.
